When news broke that longtime Marvel Studios executive Victoria Alonso had left the company, it sent shock waves through Hollywood.
Alonso, along with Kevin Feige and Louis D’ Esposito, made up a triumvirate at Marvel that saw the studio launch from retaliative obscurity to box office behemoth.
While Alonso’s quick, and under the radar, exit led many to assume that she was ousted, we now have more pieces to the puzzle.
A Shocking Exit
According to sources, Alonso was fired as Marvel’s president of physical production, post-production, VFX and animation.
While the cause of Alonso’s termination remains unclear, sources say that the decision was made by a conglomerate of forces including human resources, Disney legal, and multiple Disney executives including Disney Entertainment co-chairmain Alan Bergman.
Furthermore, it appears that Alonso’s longtime boss Kevin Feige, felt he was unable to intervene and help her. The news reportedly blindside Alonso.
A Storied Career
Since joining Marvel Studios in 2006, Alonso has helped Marvel become a box-office institution. Working alongside D’ Esposito and Feige, Alonso was instrumental in bringing characters such as Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, and Thor to the forefront of popular culture.
While she was held in high esteem by her Hollywood peers, Alonso began to face criticism in 2021 from the VFX industry.
According to a slew of media reports, VFX artists complained about Marvel’s demanding expectations, with many artists going through emotional breakdowns due to the stress.
Alonso herself was identified by some artists a “kingmaker”, who kept a blacklist of artists who failed to meet their quotas, or left projects early.
These revelations were followed by a a torrent of criticism of the visual effects of Marvel’s more recent releases, including the Disney + series She-Hulk and Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which struggled at the box office.
At this time, Disney has not announced who will replace Alonso at Marvel. With the studio’s release schedule slowing down however, now seems like a good time for Marvel to stop and reflect before moving forward.
