The Italian actress suffered several fractures after an accident at her Swiss home
Sophia Loren is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery on Sunday. The 89-year-old Italian actress suffered several fractures after a bad fall at her home in Geneva. According to reports, Loren fell inside her bathroom and sustained several fractures to her hip and a fracture to her femur.
On Sunday afternoon, “Sophia underwent surgery with a positive outcome and will now have to undergo a short period of convalescence followed by a path towards complete rehabilitation,” announced Sophia Loren Restaurant on their Instagram.
Loren was set to open a new franchise of her self-named restaurant on Sep. 26, in the Italian city of Bari. There, she was also set to receive honorary citizenship from the port city.
“Fortunately, everything went well and the lady will be back with us very soon,” continued the statement.
Sources also told The Hollywood Reporter that the actress’ sons, Carlo Jr. and Edoardo Ponti, are by her side at the hospital in Switzerland.
In 2020, Edoardo brought his mother out of semi-retirement for his Netflix feature The Life Ahead, which won Loren a David di Donatello Award for best actress. In 2021, she was the subject of the Netflix documentary What Would Sophia Loren Do?
Loren’s last public appearance was Sep 2, at the Armani “One Night Only” fashion show at the 80th Venice Film Festival. As the evening’s guest of honor, Loren sat in the first row, accompanied by Ponti and his wife Sasha Alexander.
