Sony says PS5 can break the company’s annual console sales record this fiscal year

Sony says PS5 can break the company’s annual console sales record this fiscal year

Sony has announced plans to sell a record number of PlayStation consoles during its current fiscal year.

The company intends to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during FY2023 (the 12-month period ending on March 31, 2024).

If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units in FY98.

PS2 recorded an annual sales peak of 22 million units in FY02, PS3 of 14.4 million units in FY10, and PS4 of 20 million units in FY16.

Sony revealed the annual PS5 target as part of its FY2022 earnings results on Friday.

During the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year, which ended in March, the company shipped 6.3 million PS5 consoles to reach 38.3 million lifetime shipments.

The figure represents a record for any games console during the first three months of a calendar year, and it’s also double PS4’s all-time peak for the same window.

During an earnings presentation on Friday, Sony’s president, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki, said the company’s PS5 forecast was based on an analysis of the number of users it’s seeing make the jump from PS4 to its successor, combined with new PlayStation customers.

“Based on this forecast, we believe that 25 million units within this fiscal year is something that we think we can achieve,” he said (translated by VGC).

Sony will open pre-orders for a Final Fantasy 16 PS5 console bundle on May 4, ahead of its release alongside the Square Enix RPG on June 22.

The company also announced a limited edition Final Fantasy 16-themed DualSense wireless controller and PS5 console cover this week, but these will only be available in Japan.
