The live-action remake of Snow White isn’t scheduled for release until March 2024. However, the film is already in the news because of a string of controversies.
The remake of the 1937 classic stars Rachel Zegler in the title role. Zegler being cast drew criticism with many saying a Latina actress doesn’t fit the original description of the princess. But that’s not the only backlash the actress has faced.
Zegler has come under fire for comments about the 1937 version. The remake is taking a more feministic approach, which Zegler is proud of, however, she continuously took digs at the original film. The actress admits to not being a fan of the original movie and implies it was outdated, and in an interview with Extra TV refers to Prince Charming as a stalker.
Aside from Zegler’s casting and comments, the film is receiving criticism about the casting of the seven dwarfs. A photo from the set revealed that the dwarves are made up of a diverse group of actors.
Son of the original Snow White director slams the remake
Disney’s decision to create a woke remake of Snow White is being met with mixed reviews. One person who isn’t a fan of the upcoming remake is David Hand, son of the director of the 1937 version.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Hand didn’t hold back on his thoughts on the remake.
“It’s a whole different concept and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it.”
Hand went on to slam Disney for ruining their classic films by trying to keep up with the times.
“Their thoughts are just so radical now. They change the stories, they change the thought process of the characters,…they’re making up new woke things and I’m just not inot any of that. I find it quite frankly a bit insulting [what] they may have done with some of these classic films. There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did.”
