Smallville star Allison Mack was released early from prison following her involvement in the NXIVM sex cult. Mack played Chloe Sullivan in Smallville, the Superman prequel series starring Tom Welling as Clark Kent that went on for ten seasons. Seven years after the show ended, the actress would be arrested due to her connection with the NXIVM sex cult, with Mack later being sentenced to serve three years in prison after pleading guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website, Mack was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, last Monday, July 3. Mack’s release is a surprise, as the actress was sentenced back in 2021 to serve three years in prison for her involvement in the NXIVM sex cult. According to PEOPLE, Mack was released early thanks to the First Step Act (FSA) — a law that allows federal inmates to receive up to 54 days of “good conduct” credit for every year of their sentence. Inmates such as Mack can also be released up to 12 months early by completing the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Residential Drug Abuse Program.
Allison Mack’s NXIVM Trial History Explained
In 2018, the FBI arrested a number of people — including Mack — involved in the NXIVM sex cult. The group functioned under the leadership of Keith Raniere, who started the sex cult under the guise of a self-help group for women. That was not at all the true goal of NXIVM, with the group exploiting the women who would join it, as Raniere manipulated some of the members into becoming his sex slaves. Mack was arrested due to her role in recruiting women to join NXIVM, helping Raniere — who was sentenced to 120 years in prison — exploit them.
Initially pleading not guilty after her arrest in April 2018, the Smallville actress would change her stance in the following year. In April 2019, Mack pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of racketeering. Mack admitted to having recruited women to join NXIVM, with the group’s secret sex cult DOS — “Dominus Obsequious Sororium” (Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions) — ruining the lives of many. Mack expressed regret over her actions, stating that she had joined NXIVM “to find a purpose” and saw now that she was wrong, saying, “I must take full responsibility for my conduct and that’s why I am pleading guilty today.”
The actress was facing up to 20 years for each charge, but Mack was sentenced in June 2021 to serve three years in prison for her involvement in the NXIVM sex cult. Ahead of her sentencing, Mack issued a letter to the court that apologized to NXIVM’s victims. That letter, along with the actress having pleaded guilty, her show of remorse, and her cooperation during the trial, likely played a role in Mack receiving a lighter sentence. Now, after her early release from prison, the Smallville actress can make amends and start to move on from “the biggest mistake and regret of [her] life,” as she described in her letter.
