While Marvel has recently stuck with its current roster of super heroes, choosing to continue to the story of previously established stars, 2019’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings proved that there is still an apatite for new heroes.
Starring Simu Liu as the titular charter, the film added an inflection of Chinese mythology into the MCU. In the film, a former martial arts master must confront his past and battle the mysterious Ten Rings terrorist organization led by his father Wenwu.
Directed and written by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film introduced not only a possible new Avenger, but also the mystical land of Ta Lo, the Dweller-in-Darkness and even a Chinese dragon known as the Great Protector.
A ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel Was Announced
Although largely divulged from the rest of the MCU, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was lauded by critics and fans alike for its story, characters, and acting.
Because of the success of Shang-Chi, in December 2021 it was announced that a sequel was in development. Cretton signed on with Marvel to return to write and direct.
“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin [Feige] and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective,” Cretton said at the time the sequel was announced. “I can’t wait to explore new stories & build new worlds with this community.”
Since the initial 2021 announcement, however, details about the future of Shang-Chi have been few and far between.
Simu Liu Says The Film Keeps Getting Pushed Back
Recently, Simu Liu took to social media and finally gave fans an update on the Shang-Chi sequel. When asked by a fan about the status of the film, Liu responded “Was told it would follow Avengers. But that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control.”
The actor added that he hoped “to have more concrete news.”
While Liu didn’t delve into the specific circumstances holding up Shang-Chi, he is likely referring to Disney’s recent changes to its release schedule. As part of a broader re-shuffling, Disney announced that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was being pushed back a year to May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars was being moved to May 7, 2027.
Shang-Chi fans can take solace in the fact that it sounds like Liu is still planning on returning. It may, however, take longer than many were hoping for to see the Avenger return to the big screen.
