Next week, the Telluride and Venice Film Festivals will officially launch the fall movie season, as everything from “Maestro” to “Poor Things” will premiere to first reactions as Oscar buzz takes flight.
But these highly anticipated feature-length offerings won’t be the only work from major directors jockeying for attention in the weeks and months ahead. Two seasoned auteurs are entering the fray with short films that could have Oscar potential as well: Sony Pictures Classics will be making the rounds with Pedro Almodóvar’s Cannes-acclaimed gay Western “Strange Way of Life,” while Netflix plans to launch Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” at Venice.
What does it say about the state of the industry when veteran filmmakers change up their formula and, in Anderson’s case, use it to make inroads with the streaming universe? That’s one of the key subjects of this week’s Screen Talk, as Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson take stock of the industry ahead of the major fall festivals.
