Shakira was honored at the MTV VMAs 2023 with the Video Vanguard Award for her career in music. Ahead of accepting the special Moon Person trophy, the Colombian superstar performed a medley of her greatest hits.
“She Wolf” kicked things off and “Te Felicito” followed. Shakira had everyone up and dancing to her hits including Taylor Swift, Tiffany Haddish and Lil Nas X. Other songs that the singer-songwriter performed were “TQG,” “Objection,” “Ojos Así,” “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie.”
Shakira dominated the VMAs stage singing and belly dancing everywhere. The star would conclude her performance singing the diss track she wrote alongside BZRP. Shakira was carried across the audience up until a platform that would make her rise up in the middle of the venue where she ended the night.
Wyclef Jean had the honor of presenting Shakira with the Video Vanguard Award, her collab partner on “Hips Don’t Lie.”
“This is amazing. It’s amazing to receive this from my friend Wyclef Jean,” Shakira said as she took the stage.
Shakira would go on to thank MTV who gave her an opportunity at the age of 18. She was also grateful to “people who have played a key role in my visual history,” which included “very dear friends,” her music label, the women who work for her and her parents.
The mother of two also gave a shoutout to her kids Milan and Sasha “for cheering me up” as they watched their mother from the stands receive the special award.
“I want to share this award with my fans who always support me through thick and thin. Thank you so much for being my army and helping me fight all my battles,” Shakira said before saying in Spanish, “This is for you my people, my Latin American people inside and outside this country. Thank you for inspiring me and for injecting me with so much energy to keep moving forward.”
