“Tell me, how did you come to Neverland?” Jude Law’s Captain Hook intones in voiceover at the beginning of the first trailer for the live-action Peter Pan & Wendy, which debuts April 28 on Disney+.
What follows is a series of moments that address exactly that: Wendy meeting the Lost Boys (and now Lost Girls), the home/hideout they’ve all created together, Wendy and her brothers meeting Peter Pan, their journey to Neverland, meeting Tinkerbell and Tiger Lilly and, finally, the reveal of Law as Captain Hook.
Disney’s 1953 animated classic is still the most successful adaptation of the J.M. Barrie novel about Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn’t age, and the children he whisks away to the magical world of Neverland. Many other versions have been produced on the big and small screens, including Steven Spielberg’s Hook starring Robin Williams and Joe Wright’s Pan, both of which disappointed at the box office.
Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the Olivier Award-nominated comedy from the creators of the Tony-winning The Play That Goes Wrong, will make its Broadway premiere on March 17.
Director David Lowery’s retelling of the tale for Disney+ is based on the original novel as well as Disney’s original animated classic, but seems to have much more of the cold light of reality cast upon it that .
Here’s the logline:
Peter Pan & Wendy introduces Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind, who meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, Wendy encounters an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.
Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson play the title characters. Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi is Tinker Bell. Law plays Captain Hook. Jim Gaffigan is also a part of the cast.
Lowery is on board to direct the project and also co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker is producing.
The film was among the shoots Disney paused on March 2020 amid the initial wave of Covid.
