As part of Disney’s larger plan to space out releases from Marvel Studios, 2023 has only seen the release of two Marvel streaming series on Disney+.
The much-maligned Secret Invasion was the first show to premiere on the streamer, when it hit Disney+ on June 21.
Season 2 of Loki, meanwhile, premiered on October 5 and is set to conclude tomorrow.
Other Marvel Studios series, including Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Ironheart, and Echo, which were initially scheduled to be released have all been pushed back to a later date.
Disney’s Announces Season 2 of ‘What If…?’
Despite the sparse nature of Marvel streaming releases, Disney made a surprise announcement yesterday. The second season of Marvel Studios’ What If…? will land on Disney+ before the end of the year.
Fans of the animated anthology series have been waiting a long time for What If…? to return.
The series originally debuted on August 11, 2021, and told the story of the Watcher, a celestial being who watches over the multiverse.
The show explored various alternate timelines across the multiverse where major moments from the MCU occur differently. The series concluded with the formation of the Guardians of the Multiverse.
A Long Time Coming
Marvel executive producer Brad Winderbaum had initially suggested that a new season of What If…? would premiere every year, beginning with Season 2 in 2022.
The show’s second season was then delayed until 2023, before being removed from the Disney+ release schedule altogether.
The reason for What If…? Season 2’s delay remains unclear. While other properties were affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the season was reportedly finished long before the onset of either strike.
According to Variety, work on the series’ third season began in July 2022. That report means that the second season should have been completed prior to that time.
Regardless of the reasons for the delay, Marvel fans will be thrilled to hear that another series will hit Disney+ this year.
The Return of the Watcher
At this time, the details of the second season of What If…? remain scarce.
In their press release, Disney teased, “The Watcher continues the journey as our guide through the vast multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe”.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to see how the next chapter in Marvel’s multiverse saga plays out.
