Although Black Widow died sacrificing herself to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame, rumors have continued to persist that Scarlett Johansson’s iconic character could somehow return to the MCU.
After 11 years and eight films, however, Johansson is done playing Romanov, a decision that she is at peace with.
Eight Films and Ten Years
Audiences were first introduced to Natasha Romanov aka the Black Widow in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Over the next decade-plus, the character became the heart of the Avengers, often doing her best to keep her makeshift family together.
Following the events of “the snap,” Romanov became the de-facto Avengers leader and one of the few who had not given up hope.
Widow’s attachment to her fellow Avengers, particularly longtime friend Clint Barton, is what made the former spy’s death so impactful.
While Widow’s death was one of the most meaningful moments in MCU’s history, it was not the last time fans got to see the character on screen.
Romanov’s tragic backstory and extended family were explored in 2021’s Black Widow, a film that ended with her sister Yelena visiting the late heroes grave.
Although Widow’s story seemed to have come to an end, as we know death isn’t necessarily final in the MCU (I’m looking at you Loki and Gamora). In fact, with the advent of the MCU multiverse, fans have clamored for Romanov, Tony Stark, and Steve Rogers to return in some fashion.
End of The Story
According to Johansson however, that isn’t in the cards.
“I also feel really good about her story coming to a close. I think she has a lot of dignity in her legacy.”
Although Johansson insists that she won’t be returning to the MCU, she has had nothing but good things to say about her time portraying Romanov. She describes the end of her eight film arc as “bittersweet.”
“Yeah, I am sad, of course,” she says. “I absolutely loved every filming experience I had, working 10 years with Marvel and with that amazing cast, and I love the character Natasha. I have a lot of empathy for her, and it was amazing to build that character over such a long period of time.”
While rumors will surely continue to persist online, it looks like in the case of Black Widow at least, Marvel’s death really is final.
