Ryan Gosling addresses criticism over his role as Ken

Ryan Gosling is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. Whether it’s a drama, rom-com, or comedy, he has the skills to pull off just about any role. Gosling’s next big role will be as the real-life version of fashion doll Ken in the upcoming Barbie movie which hits theaters on July 21.

The film is generating a lot of buzz through a myriad of promotional campaigns, and all eyes will be on Gosling and his co-star Margot Robbie, who will be starring as the titular doll, Barbie.

Fans initially criticized Ryan Gosling for being cast as Ken

When plans for a live-action Barbie movie were announced, fans were absolutely thrilled. With Robbie cast as the blonde-haired, pink-loving doll, the next question to come up was who would play her long-time boyfriend Ken.

Gosling was the top contender for the role and after negotiations, the actor signed on for the film. However, the casting of Gosling wasn’t without criticism from Barbie fans around the world. One of the main concerns was that the La La Land actor was too old to play Ken.

In a recent interview with GQ, Gosling fired back at the Ken critics.

“I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with. It is funny, this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this?”

Gosling went on to explain how Ken was always viewed as just Barbie’s boyfriend, and nobody cared for the character before.

“And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly it’s like, ‘No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time.’ No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f***** with Ken. That’s the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.”

Gosling is proving the Ken haters wrong. In a new clip from the movie, Gosling shows his character’s vulnerable side with the song ‘I’m Just Ken.’ See below on E! News official YouTube channel:
