Rockstar releases GTA 6 trailer early, following leak

This article was updated at 23:30 GMT.

Rockstar Games has released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 and confirmed a 2025 release date.

As revealed via a high-profile game leak last year, the trailer confirms the new instalment will partly take place in Vice City – a fictional Miami – and star a pair of protagonists (one of whom, in a first for the series, is a women).

Rockstar was due to premiere its GTA 6 trailer on Tuesday. However, on Monday an anonymous X (formerly Twitter) account forced its hand by uploaded a low res and heavily watermarked version of the reveal video early.

The account which posted the trailer was quickly banned from X, and shortly after Rockstar published an official version of the trailer, writing: “Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube.”

One GTA 6 developer expressed their disappointment on social media following the trailer’s leaking and early publication, claiming it had robbed them of plans to watch the live reaction with the rest of the development team.

According to a press release published by parent company Take-Two, GTA 6 will initially be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, but there is no mention of PC.

This is perhaps unsurprising since both Grand Theft Auto V and IV were released on consoles first, followed by a PC port later.

According to the PR, Grand Theft Auto VI will take place in the state of Leonida, “home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond”, in what Take-Two is calling “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet”.

“Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

Rockstar Games first announced last month that GTA 6’s first trailer would arrive in December to mark the company’s 25th anniversary.

Rockstar confirmed in February 2022 that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series was “well underway”, but it didn’t provide any more details about the game.

However, in September 2022, one of the games industry’s most high-profile data leaks saw over an hour of GTA 6 development footage published online , giving players their first look at the sequel to one of the best-selling games of all time.
