Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts has been in a relationship with massage therapist and businesswoman Amber Laign for 18 years, and in 2023, they’ll tie knot!
The couple met on a blind date in 2005, but kept their relationship private for years until Roberts came out as gay to the public in 2013. The couple still manages to keep a very low profile, but make some public appearances together.
From 2005 to their upcoming 2023 wedding, here’s a timeline of Robin Roberts and Amber Laign’s relationship.
2005
Roberts and Laign meet on a blind date. “I liked the fact that she had no idea who I was,” Roberts wrote in her 2014 memoir, Everybody’s Got Something, per Closer Weekly. “She rarely followed sports, so she never saw me on ESPN…and her office mates at the time watched a different morning show.”
2013
The couple kept a low profile for years because it wasn’t until December 31, 2013, that Roberts came out to the public as gay. In a Facebook post, Roberts wrote, “I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.” Although Roberts did not post Amber’s last name, the press made the connection quickly.
2014
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Roberts opened up about her long term secret relationship with Laign, and why she chose to come out to the public. “She’s very, very supportive and she’s been right there beside me every step of the way,” Robin said. She also said that Laign is not as comfortable on camera. “Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight,” Roberts said.
2020
In July, Laign and Roberts commemorated their 15th anniversary with an Instagram post featuring a collage of photos of the couple over the years. “Your grace caught my eye right away and the ease of the evening continued to flow through dinner ? ,” Laign wrote in a post that Roberts also posted on her account. “We had a second date soon after and I couldn’t believe how at ease I was with you as we shared each other’s lives sipping lychee and apple martinis ? You left for Tahiti the following day and during that time apart I grew this feeling inside of me that still, is very present today….butterflies.”
