Earlier this year, anticipation for the summer movie season came down to one word: Barbenheimer. However, now that “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are out in the world and doing well, moviegoers haven’t stopped going to movies. “TMNT” and “The Meg 2” opened well last weekend while “Stray” and “Bottoms” are just around the corner. Meanwhile, on the arthouse front, the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival both unleashed massive lineups that guarantee the fall movie season will generate a lot of enthusiasm well into the next stage of the year.
In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn is joined by executive film editor Kate Erbland (Anne Thompson is on vacation) to discuss some of the most intriguing offerings from these lineups. They also recap the latest stage of the WGA strike and why last week’s conversation stalled. Erbland shares her thoughts on “TMNT” and makes the case for its awards season prospects, and they look ahead to more developments around the corner.
