After spinning off from JAG in 2003, NCIS has expanded into one of the biggest serialized universes in TV history, with the original show still running and having produced more than half a dozen spin-offs since then. NCIS is now fast approaching its 24th season on TV, which will even bring back original lead Michael Weatherly from the show’s first 13 seasons. Meanwhile, LL Cool J is coming back to reprise his role as Special Agent Sam Hanna in the NCIS: New York spin-off this fall, and Mark Harmon will take on an even bigger on-screen role in NCIS: Origins as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
In the midst of these shows’ runs, Weatherly reunited with Cote de Pablo in 2025 for another spin-off, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which ran on Paramount+. This show centered on Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo and de Pablo’s Ziva David, co-parenting their daughter Tali before an unknown assailant attempts to steal Interpol funds and frames Tony for the crime. Unfortunately, NCIS: Tony & Ziva was canceled after one season in Dec. 2025, seemingly cutting off the two characters’ stories after fans spent much of the last 20 years watching them grow alongside each other. Now, more details have come out about why the decision was made to end the show so quickly.
Speaking with Deadline, Jane Wiseman (EVP & Head of Originals for Paramount+) explained why NCIS: Tony & Ziva was canceled after only one season. Unfortunately, she noted that the show was too expensive to keep making with such low viewing numbers, even though she and the team “were all fans of it:”
“‘Tony & Ziva,’ unfortunately, for the cost, did not make sense with the viewing, although we were all fans of it.”
