“I will put it out there into the world,” Rami Malek shared. “I love the idea of playing Buster Keaton. I hope that one day, it comes to fruition. I think it will.”
Rami Malek has always dreamed of bringing American Actor Buster Keaton to life on screen, during a press tour for his film “The Little Things”, he mentioned his fantasy role was playing Keaton, and now, he is finally about to add that to his filmography.
The Oscar and Emmy winner is best known for his roles as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody and Elliot Alderson in Mr Robot. He also stars in James Bond’s “No Time To Die”, “Papillion” and “The Pacific”. Now Malek takes on a limited series about Keaton, a role he has longed to play, with “The Batman” Director Matt Reeves set to helm the project.
Reeves’ 6th & Idaho Productions, Malek and David Weddle are producing. Three-time Emmy winner Ted Cohen (Friends, Succession, Veep) is in negotiations to write and serve as an executive producer on the project. James Curtis’ Buster Keaton: A Filmmaker’s Life is being eyed as the source material for the series, with negotiations underway by the studio to secure the book.The project is primed for streaming and Networks.
Keaton, who lived from 1895 to 1966 was known as one of the greatest male stars of classic Hollywood and the silent film era, aside from Charlie Chaplin, keaton was an actor, comedian, and filmmaker. He got his start as a child in vaudevile acts alongside his parents, who were traveling performers, before transitioning into film. He is best known for his silent film work, in which his trademark was physical comedy accompanied by a deadpan expression that earned him the nickname “The Great Stone Face”. He starred in films such as The Playhouse, Cops, The Electric House, Sherlock Jr and The General and many more. Keaton went through many ordeals in life behind the camera, with the failure of his marriage and the loss of his independence as a filmmaker, Keaton descended into alcoholism, he was briefly institutionalized.
Filmmakers such as Mel Brooks, Martin Scorsese and Orson Welles were inspired by Keaton, considering him to be an artist who was ahead of his time.
The title of the series has yet to be revealed and Warner Brothers declined to make a statement.
Malek will next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, premiering July 21st alongside a star studded cast. He recently starred in the film “Amsterdam” alongside Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Malek is already working with the same motion coach who prepped him for his role as Freddie Mercury Polly Bennet. If anyone can recreate Buster’s stoic expressions, its him. Malek has a wide range when it comes to his acting, and we have seen him bring multiple true stories to life with great detail for each character he plays. Being a big Keaton fan himself, we can expect a special performance. Now Rami Malek, time to make Buster Keaton proud.
