King Charles’s coronation is just 40 days away and the preparations for the same could not have been more intense. With every other royal fiasco going on, the monarchy has been carrying on the crowning ceremony’s preparation with all pomp and show. Apart from the grandeur of decoration and aesthetics, royal attire will also play a vital role in the ceremony. Hence, there could be no compromises with the same. However, Queen Camilla will have to give up something, for obvious reasons.

Following Queen Mary, who wore the Koh-i-noor-clad crown for the first time and continued at every momentous royal event, various rulers have been the rightful owner of the same. The priceless diamond has come down to generations till being mounted on the late Queen’s pieces of jewelry. However, the Queen Consort of King Charles will not be opting for the same.

#Camilla, wife of Britain’s King Charles, will wear the crown of Queen Mary for her coronation in May, Buckingham Palace said, avoiding the use of a crown featuring the 105-carat #Kohinoor diamond which India has demanded be returned.

Owing to its roots in the Indian subcontinent, there seems to be some legal row about the ownership of the diamond. As reported by Telegraph, India’s ruling party in the year 2022 issued a critical heads-up for the Kingdom to keep in mind. The ordinance wrote that Queen Camilla wearing it for her coronation will bring back “painful memories of the colonial past.” Hence, plans to mount it on the already controversial Queen were “reconsidered amid fears of a diplomatic row.”

It has been an age-old custom of the Kingdom’s Sovereigns to wear the Koh-i-Noor-clad coronation crown at the time of accession to the throne. Ever since the 1700s, British monarchs, especially the women rulers of their reign, have been closely following this prestigious custom, but not anymore.

Why is the Koh-i-noor so controversial for Queen Camilla?

For those unversed, the diamond first came from India during the great Imperialism period of the world, with world wars going on at all fronts. Speaking of the colonial rule of Great Britain, the Koh-i-noor was forcibly taken away from the land to which it actually belonged. A notorious Iranian ruler, Nader Shah, first looted India of the diamond before it finally landed at the royal threshold of the United Kingdom.

No sooner did the British East India company get hold of Punjab after its annexation to the throne. The then-ruler Queen Mary became the supposed owner of the same. Ever since the game of thrones for power and prestige had begun with this diamond. Hence, to keep controversies at bay, Camilla Queen Consort is to maintain a tight lip and agree with him.
