One of the biggest movies of 2026 so far is now available to stream at home, and Project Hail Mary is more than worth the price of a digital purchase or rental. The sci-fi epic stars Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who wakes up on a spacecraft — the Hail Mary — with no memory of who he is or why he’s alone in deep space. Through flashbacks, viewers learn he’s been given an impossible task: save Earth’s sun, which is being eaten by a mysterious microorganism called astrophage, from dying. The movie then takes a turn into something of a buddy comedy as an alien scientist named Rocky enters the picture and Grace discovers he’s not completely alone — and he doesn’t have to save the universe alone either. This big, flashy blockbuster is a perfect showcase for Gosling’s physical comedy and the relationship he builds with Rocky, who was performed by a team of puppeteers and voiced by the lead puppeteer, is both hilarious and touching. Ultimately, Project Hail Mary is the hopeful, heartwarming story we’ve been needing more of.
