As the WGA strike continues to put all scripted television and films on pause, we are starting to get a better feel for how far along in development certain projects are.
For Marvel, the strike is not expected to affect upcoming finished releases like The Marvels, or Season 2 of Loki, however, that doesn’t mean the studio isn’t feeling the pressure.
Blade Paused Due To Strike
According to insiders, due to the ongoing writer’s strike, Marvel has shut down pre-production on Blade.
The superhero reboot is set to star Mahershala Ali as the titular vampire hunter. He will be joined by Aaron Pierre, Delroy Lindo, and Mia Goth.
While the film wasn’t set to be released until September 6, 2024, production was expected to begin within the next month in Atlanta.
Troubled Production
Although other projects throughout Hollywood have also been stalled, the news is especially troubling for Blade. The film was originally intended for a 2023 release, however, it was pushed back last October after the original director, Bassam Tariq, left the project.
In November of last year, Yann Demange took over directing duties with a script by Michael Starrbury. Then, in April, Nic Pixxolatto joined the production, re-writing Starrbury’s screenplay. The writer reportedly ran out of time before the strike began.
While Blade will resume production after the writer’s strike, other Marvel properties have reportedly been unaffected. Thunderbolts, for example, which was also scheduled for a 2024 release, is moving ahead in pre-production.
