Someone’s gotta be the spare—at least, that’s what “worries” Prince Harry.
In yet another interview about his memoir, the Duke of Sussex opened up about his concern for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children: nine-year-old Prince George, seven-year-old Princess Charlotte, and four-year-old Prince Louis.
According to People, Prince Harry discussed the emotional ramifications of the royal line of succession in a new interview with The Telegraph, released on January 12. “As I know full well, within my family, if it’s not us,” Harry said while pointing to himself, “it’s going to be someone else.”
He continued, “And though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare. And that hurts, that worries me.”

Despite many shocking revelations in Spare, particularly involving the author’s “beloved brother and archnemesis,” the royal family has remained tight-lipped about Prince Harry’s tell-all. In fact, Will and Kate pointedly ignored a direct question about the memoir from an ITV journalist while visiting Liverpool on January 12. However, if Prince Harry was told that his niece and nephews are not his responsibility, it’s unlikely the Prince and Princess of Wales will be pleased with this update.
Regarding the Sussex children, Prince Harry says he would “love nothing more” than for three-year-old Archie and one-year-old Lilibet to get to know their family on the other side of the pond. “I’ve said before that I’ve wanted a family, not an institution,” he told People in his recent cover interview. “So of course, I would love nothing more than for our children to have relationships with members of my family, and they do with some, which brings me great joy.”
