Preview of new Hulu‘s murder-mystery rom-com series “Wedding Season”

Two people fall in love with each other and in the end – they get married which sounds like your typical romantic comedy. However, that is not what you will see in Wedding Season, a new show and first British project, created for Disney+ with an attachment to Hulu.

The writers promise to give the audience a black comedy that breaks the usual ideas about the genre of detective, comedy and melodrama. The film directed by George Kane (“Crashing”), and written by screenwriters – Oliver Lyttelton (“Cheaters”) and Darren Johnson (“Siblings”) tells the story of two young people Katie and Stefan. The of them meet and have an immediate connection. Although Katie is taken, her and Stefan get somewhat romantically involved. However, it looks like it wasn’t meant to be as we find out that Katie is engaged and set to be married.

On the wedding day, Katie and her husband’s entire family were murdered. Suddenly suspicion falls on her and Stefan who knew here and can be connected (you will see).  Katie thinks Stefan did it and he – that she did it. The police suspect everyone and begin an interrogation that bleeds this romantic comedy into a Jason Bourne action series real fast with both Katie and Stefan on the run together.

Our couple try to prove that they are innocent but even as a viewer its hard to know who is telling the truth. The duo find themselves in numerous hysterical situations (prepare for your stomach to hurt) and moments that find you sighing from its cure bravado. You never know whats coming next and the story just keeps getting better and better.

Gavin Drea (Stefan) and Rosa Salazar (Katie) are both amazing actors that make you feel for each of them pretty quickly. Before the end of the first episode, you want these two characters to be together, yet we barely know them. I guess that is somewhat similar to how Katie and Stefan must feel. But they are able to help the audience dive into this bending dark comedy show with empathy, laugher, and love.

Drea, who was glad to act in a comedic genre and said he instantly connected with this script. In an interview with Gavin talks about how great it was working with Rosa, saying, “she’s so talented and she’s passionate and we had a really good dynamic I think, which hopefully come across on screen, but yeah, it’s just really fun.” Then when it came to talking about the sweet and coy Stefan, Drea added,  “He’s a real optimist as well and I think that’s what I love about him. I’m probably a bit of pessimist but he’s incredibly hopeful. No matter how many hits he takes, he gets up and keeps going. And I think it’s a very likable quality about somebody.”

Here is an exclusive interview from Silence on Set podcast with Drea about the show:
