Paul Walter Hauser has already won both a Critics Choice Award and Golden Globe for his chilling turn as serial killer Larry Hall in Apple TV+’s limited series, Black Bird. There is a lot of Emmy buzz on this one as well, and that shouldn’t be surprising for Hauser who has a knack for playing characters on the fringe of society and bringing them to vivid life.
Think of the title role he had in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, who was the accused Atlanta Olympics bomber, or the sketchy Shawn Eckhardt involved in the schemes of Tonya Harding in the Oscar winning I, Tonya, or his comical turn as one of Cruella De Ville’s henchmen, Horace in the live action Cruella. He also made vivid impressions working with Spike Lee in both BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods. And on top of all this and his performance in Black Bird this season , he also made a huge impression in his recurring role as Stingray in the hit Netflix series, Cobra Kai.
Hauser is a man of many talents, and much in demand as he joins me for this week’s episode of my Deadline video series, The Actor’s Side where we discuss all of this, and notably those two current tv roles that are getting lots of talk including how he inhabited the notorious Hall, his vocal work and hair and costumes , and playing the incarcerated killer with such conviction even as he had to go to such dark places in doing so.
