Amazon Studios has debuted the first trailer for its long-anticipated sci-fi drama Foe, starring Academy Award nominees Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) & Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad), which it will release in U.S. theaters October 6th.
Co-written, directed and produced by Garth Davis, the filmmaker behind the Academy Award-nominated Lion, the film adapting the book by New York Times bestseller Iain Reid (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) is billed as a haunting exploration of marriage and identity set in an uncertain world, which pits humanity against an artificial alternative.
The year is 2065, and Hen (Ronan) and Junior (Mescal) are a married couple with seven years under their belt, living a solitary life on their isolated farm that’s been in the latter’s family for generations. But their quiet life is thrown into turmoil by the arrival of an uninvited stranger (Pierre), who shows up at their door with a startling proposal.
Junior, he says, has been selected to live “up there” — meaning on an experimental state station orbiting Earth. But not to worry. Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Hen won’t have a chance to miss him, because she won’t be left alone — not even for a moment. She’ll instead be met, the trailer suggests, with some kind of robotic equivalent of her spouse. The company she then keeps will push her to make a life-changing decision.
Set to world premiere in the Spotlight section of the New York Film Festival, which runs this year from September 29th through October 15th, Foe will be released by Amazon in Canada on October 13th, coming to Australia via Transmission Films on Oct. 19th, and to the UK and Ireland via MetFilmDistribution on Oct. 20th.
Davis directed from his script written with author Reid. Producers included Kerry Kohansky-Roberts for AC Studios, Davis for I Am That, and See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, with Dawn Olmstead, David Levine, Robert Walak, Samantha Lang and Reid serving as executive producers.
Reminiscent of the recent Black Mirror episode “Beyond the Sea” starring Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett and Kate Mara, the film’s trailer can be found above.
