Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a fantastic return for the series, further cementing 2026 as CAPCOM’s year. Following strong critical and player reception, the game has exceeded expectations by selling over one million copies on launch day.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sells Over 1 Million Copies
CAPCOM has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword surpassed 1 million units in worldwide sales on launch day, September 4, 2026. As the first new title in the series in more than 20 years, Onimusha: Way of the Sword has found a modern audience, with CAPCOM confirming in its press release that it aims to continue “reactivating IPs” that haven’t received a new title recently.
Cumulative sales of the entire Onimusha series have now surpassed 10 million units across all platforms. Ahead of launch, CAPCOM released multiple demos for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, including a benchmark tool for PC, which helped generate player feedback and interest in the game. The demo is still up on all platforms and gives a good idea of what to expect from the combat system.
CAPCOM revealed in July 2026 that Pragmata, its newest IP, had sold over 2.5 million copies, while Resident Evil Requiem had surpassed 8 million units in cumulative sales. Almost every major release from CAPCOM this year has seen strong sales and positive player and critical reception.
2026 isn’t over yet, and CAPCOM already has Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on the horizon. The company has also released a major patch for the main game that significantly improves its performance across all platforms, especially PC. Given CAPCOM’s consistent, high-quality output, it’s clear the company has figured out how to launch several major titles a year while continuing to release remakes, remasters, and collections alongside them.
The strong sales of Onimusha: Way of the Sword should ideally lead to more interest in the IP, and I hope we see both new entries and remasters of the remaining games, especially Onimusha 3, which is still stuck on the PS2. It’s one of the best entries in the series and a must-play for fans. Both Onimusha 1 and 2 have received remasters, so if Way of the Sword is your first exposure to the series, both are worth checking out.
