The streamer has finally given (some) filmmakers the credit they deserve.
Right after Warner Bros. Discovery launched its hybrid streaming platform, Max, viewers started to notice that Max was crediting writers, directors, and producers as “creators” on the “details” page.
Max Communications reached out to No Film School a month ago setting that they will revise the credits to accurately acknowledge filmmakers. After five weeks of waiting, WBD has updated the “details” page on Max. According to Variety, the update will roll out throughout the week on all devices.
Many stood against Max’s consolidation of creative talent on projects to be a slap in the face to new and veterans in the industry. The Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America slammed the “unilateral decision by Warner Bros. Discovery to change the long-standing individual credits of directors and writers in the new rollout of Max.”
Although Max believes that this credit detail was an oversight during the transition from HBO Max to Max, it is hard to not feel that this mistake was easily avoidable, especially since the move came in the first weeks of the WGA writers’ strike.
The devaluation of roles on set and cinema as a medium has been prevalent over the past year, with WBD CEO David Zaslav shelving and completely removing films and TV shows from the culture to reduce the billion dollars of debt the company has accumulated over the years.
While we are happy to see directors, writers, and producers receiving the credit they deserve for their work on films, the initial move and inability to give respect to creatives in the industry from the streamer will leave a mark on the film community and culture.
