A spokesperson for the amusement park said that the crash left one dead and several people injured.

Eyewitnesses spoke of “chaotic” scenes as police cordoned off parts of the park while it appears the accident caused the ride’s wheels to come off.

A witness named Cecilia told Aftonbladet: “First we heard three, four loud bangs. People started screaming and then people started running.

“At first they thought it was a shooting. Then we saw how the wheels from the cart were on the ground.

“That was probably what sounded so loud. It’s terrible, this kind of thing can’t happen.”

Police said they were still investigating.

“We are emptying the park and we’ve started our investigation,” a police spokesperson said.

Grona Lund said in a statement the 140-year-old park was closed until further notice.

Jenny Lagerstedt, a journalist visiting the park with her family, told SVT she was nearby and heard a metallic noise and noticed the track structure was shaking at the time of the accident.

She said: “My husband saw a roller coaster car with people in it falling to the ground.

“My children were scared,” she added.

Head of information at the park Annika Troselius, said that several people are injured and that the extent of the damage is unclear.

She told Aftonbladet: “I have just arrived on site and will receive an update on the situation.

“The park has been evacuated and emergency services are on site. Now we focus on taking care of the affected and our staff.

“The reason for that is something that we must return to. Everyone is one hundred percent focused on helping the victims now.”

The steel-tracked Jetline roller coaster reaches a speed of up to 56 mph and a height of 98 feet, transporting more than one million visitors each year, the amusement park says on its website.
