With the release of Aftersun in theaters this weekend, be sure to familiarize yourself with Paul Mescal’s BAFTA-winning turn in Normal People before you go see it. Based on the book by Sally Rooney, Normal People tells the story of Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Mescal), two Teenagers growing up in a small town in Ireland. While Connell is popular and well-liked, Marianne is hated with no friends. When they begin a secret relationship with one another, they are completely unaware that their lives are about to change, for better and worse. With its beautiful shots of various countries, from Ireland to Italy to Sweden, along with its careful depiction of coming-of-age and class, Normal People is a delicate romance to behold that you won’t want to stop watching. Bonus points if you develop an Irish accent by the time you’re done.
