Theatre fans! You only have a few more chances to see Kander and Ebb’s New York, New York before it leaves the Broadway stage. The musical is is set to close at the St. James Theatre on Sunday, July 30. New York, New York hit the Broadway stage for previews on Mar 24, 2023 and officially opened on Apr 26. The news of the show closing signals an abbreviated end to the 1940s set musical. Deadline announced the news of its impending arrival in August 2022.
The show is based on the 1977 Martin Scorcese film of the same name which starred Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli. Although the characters from the movie don’t make the transfer into the Broadway adaptation, four Kander and Ebb songs were used in Scorsese’s film including the show’s titular track.
The Broadway cast features the talents of Colton Ryan as Jimmy Doyle, Anna Uzele as Francine Evans, Clyde Alves as Tommy Caggiano, John Clay III as Jesse Webb, Janet Dacal as Sofia Diaz, Ben Davis as Gordon Kendrick, Oliver Prose as Alex Mann, Angel Sigala as Mateo Diaz, and Emily Skinner as Madame Veltri. Producers include Sonia Friedman (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Ferryman) and Tom Kirdahy (Inheritance).
New York, New York scored nine nominations at this year’s 76th Tony Awards including by not limited to Ryan for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical’ and Susan Stroman for ‘Best Choreography’, but the flashy musical only brought home one award which was given to Beowulf Boritt for ‘Best Scenic Design in a Musical.’
The news of its closing follows the previously-made announcement of a strike that was about to be called into effect by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) against The Broadway League and Disney Theatrical. According to Playbill, the strike has since been averted after the parties came to a temporary agreement.
