A new Blue Beetle trailer makes it clear about the movie’s DC Universe setting as the rebooted Superman is name-dropped. As the DCEU comes to an end this year, James Gunn’s new DC Universe is getting a little early push this year, thanks to Blue Beetle. While Jaime Reyes’ solo film may not have been designed from the start to fit into a new franchise, Blue Beetle will factor into what DC Studios is building over the next couple of years.
Like most superhero films, it has already been established Blue Beetle will have a few DC Easter eggs here and there. In fact, Batman was referenced in the first Blue Beetle movie trailer. However, it appears a different Justice League member will also be mentioned, as a new Blue Beetle trailer (via @DCVerso1) references another DC icon.
During the Blue Beetle trailer, Jaime is experimenting with the scarab as he is trying to learn how to fly. As he is trying to get himself amped up, Jaime ends up saying, “Superman can fly,” making it the first time the Man of Steel has been referenced in this film.
How Blue Beetle Sets Up The New DC Universe
In a clever way, Blue Beetle is setting up the new DC Universe, despite it never being the original purpose. One of the key details that Gunn has revealed about his new franchise is superheroes are established and active in this continuity, hence the premise of Superman: Legacy, which will follow a younger version of Clark Kent, who is already a costumed savior. With Blue Beetle having now mentioned both Batman and Superman, it wouldn’t be shocking if other DC heroes planned for the new franchise get alluded to throughout the story.
Blue Beetle can essentially be looked at as a soft prologue to Gunn’s DC Universe Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” or, to use comic book terms, issue #0, to the larger universe. It may not have direct setup for projects like Superman: Legacy, The Brave and The Bold, or some of the Max shows, including Lanterns, but it’s basically a little taste of this particular corner of DC Studios’ new continuity. What also helps Blue Beetle with its DC references and name-drops is that it never shows the audience anything visually, thus avoiding conflict with the DC Universe later on once they have more actors cast and costumes designed.
With less than a month to go, time will tell how Blue Beetle does both critically and commercially, especially after The Flash movie bombed at the box office. What will be interesting to see after Blue Beetle is how and where Jaime shows up next in Gunn’s DC Universe. Hopefully, as Blue Beetle arrives in a few weeks, Warner Bros. Discovery will finally be able to get a superhero victory as they get ready for the new DC Universe.
