The first trailer for Netflix‘s upcoming Onimusha anime has been shown.
The show, which will start streaming on November 2, will focus on Onimusha: Blade Warriors character Musashi Miyamoto.
Onimusha is directed by Takashi Miike, the controversial Japanese filmmaker known for working on violent movies.
Previous Miike-helmed movies have included Audition, Ichi the Killer, Blade of the Immortal and Gozu. He also directed the live-action Ace Attorney movie in 2012.
Musashi’s appearance is based on that of Toshiro Mifune, the globally recognisable Japanese actor who starred in numerous Akira Kurosawa films including Seven Samurai and Rashomon.
“This is the beginning of an intense series full of realistic action in which Musashi’s blade slices through evil as he traverses a land plagued by poverty,” reads Netflix’s description.
The trailer can be seen below, or on the Netflix Anime YouTube channel:
Netflix first announced last year that it was working on an anime adaptation of Onimusha.
Its previous description of the show read: “The beginning of the Edo period, Musashi is no longer a young man. He departs with the legendary Oni Gauntlet to defeat the Genma. 3D CGI characters and hand-drawn backgrounds create phenomenal visuals. Onimusha is given a new life using modern-day animation technology.”
The Onimusha series was developed by Capcom, with the first game in the series, Onimusha: Warlords, releasing in 2001.
On September 27, Netflix will be hosting Drop 01, a “virtual showcase celebrating the best of Netflix’s genre animation series”.
The main highlight of the show will be Castlevania: Nocturne, the first three episodes of which will air during the 90-minute presentation.
A promotional poster image accompanying the announcement teases some of the other shows set to be revealed, including a Capcom logo. This may be referring to Onimusha.
