Netflix limited series, Dahmer- Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story Premieres Sept 21

Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer gruesomely took the lives of seventeen innocent victims. DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is a Netflix limited series that exposes these unconscionable crimes, centered around the underserved victims and their communities.

All of them were impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police. This failure allowed one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade.

Evan Peters on playing Jeffrey Dahmer

Peters (Jeffrey Dahmer) recently sat for an interview with Netflix to discuss how he prepared to play the complex and disturbing character. Although there are several documentaries and movies about Dahmer, this 10-episode limited series focuses on the ripple effect of his actions.

Peters said he spoke with the show’s producer, Ryan Murphy for background materials. Murphy sent him the script and recommended the Stone Phillips interview with Dahmer. Additionally, Peters researched Dahmer through biographies,  the police report, and watching Dahmer’s confession. While he said this was one of the “hardest” roles he ever had to do, one of the most important things was to make sure the story didn’t glorify Dahmer.

Interviews below contain SPOILERS including extra scenes (not shown in the trailers):

Niecy Nash, on telling the untold account of Glenda Cleveland

Nash plays Dahmer’s next door neighbor, Glenda Cleveland. Cleveland’s story has been basically untold in past stories about Dahmer. Although there was little in terms of documentaries about Cleveland, Nash said this story is “timeless” because it is still relevant and there are still “communities that are being underserved, being over-policed in the wrong way.”

Moreover, she felt the responsibility to tell the story through Cleveland’s eyes because of the lack of knowledge about her. Although Nash didn’t get into the specifics about her research, she did offer an opinion as to why she feels Cleveland was ignored all of that time. First, because it was a Black woman complaining to police; and second because Dahmer claimed that he was in a relationship with the victims.

More on the Interview

During one of the episodes, Cleveland attends the funeral of the young man, and sits next to his father. Nash tears up while recalling this poignant scene, “I think it was homophobia on one hand, and not having that much respect for a Black woman on the other hand.”

Netflix released its first full length trailer a few days ago. To watch the first trailer click here. However, since then, a new trailer was released on September 20 in anticipation for the new series.
