One of the biggest action thriller global hits ever unleashed by 
Netflix has a sequel in the works. Introducing a shadowy society of assassins amid a martial arts-infused world of uber-violence, while the similarly themed John Wick may have now sparked one of the most successful action franchises of all time, this Netflix outing is swimming quickly in Baba Yaga’s wake.
Best-known for other acclaimed action fare like The Night Comes for Us and The Big 4, filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has now smashed his way into Hollywood, helming last year’s action thriller sequel Nobody 2, and next joining forces with genre icon Jason Statham for another series of buzzworthy thrills in The Beekeeper 2. But he hasn’t taken his eyes off one of his most exciting recent releases, with Tjahjanto revealing on X (formerly Twitter) that he is still working on a follow-up to 2024’s streaming smash hit The Shadow Strays.
Written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto, The Shadow Strays is led by Aurora Ribero as the assassin known as Codename 13, who, after nearly botching a mission and being suspended from duties, meets Monji, a young boy who lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When Monji disappears, 13 sets off on a path of destruction to find her only friend at any cost, even if it means defying her mentor and the organization she belongs to: The Shadows.
While The Shadow Strays 2 has not yet been officially confirmed by Netflix (though surely it’s inevitable considering the rise of Timo Tjahjanto, 25.6 million hours viewed, and the first outing’s 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the filmmaker behind the modern action thriller masterpiece has now confirmed that he is currently, but slowing, writing the sequel. As well as offering an update and some integral insight into the motivations of Codename 13, Tjahjanto also declared that The Shadow Strays 2 “will deliver the craziest Ninja combat ever done by women.” Meaning, somehow, despite the first movie having already achieved this, the sequel would go even further.
While we await official news regarding The Shadow Strays 2 and the wider franchise that Tjahjanto is planning, the director will next unite with Jason Statham for The Beekeeper 2, which is scheduled to be released worldwide on January 15, 2027, by Amazon MGM Studios.
