Netflix has released the trailer for the sequel to the 2000 stop-motion animated comedy, “Chicken Run.” The upcoming feature, titled “Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget,” is set to premiere this December.
Featuring an all-new voice cast, “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” follows Ginger (Thandiwe Newton), as she sets up a peaceful sanctuary far from the human world having recently escaped from the evil Tweedy farm. Finally, with the hatching of Molly (Bella Ramsey), Ginger and Rocky (Zachary Levi) seem to have their “happily ever after.” But, unknown to them, outside their peaceful world chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat.
Newton takes over the role of Ginger from “Absolutely Fabulous” actor Julia Sawalha while Levi steps in for Mel Gibson, who voiced Rocky in the first movie. One voice actor who will be returning is Miranda Richardson (“Good Omens”), who is back as arch villain Mrs Tweedy. She will be joined by comedian Peter Serafinowicz, making his “Chicken Run” debut as hapless businessman Reginald Smith.
The new trailer gives fans a first look at the challenges Ginger and Rocky will face as they battle to take down Mrs Tweedy’s evil operation.
“They say a movie is only as good as its villain and Ginger’s nemesis, Mrs Tweedy is one of the all-time greats,” said director Sam Fell. “Now she’s out to take industrial-scale revenge on all chicken-kind with the ‘Dawn of the Nugget.’ Miranda has a unique understanding of drama and comedy, making you laugh while scaring the pants off you in the exact same moment. Also rounding out our fantastic cast is Peter Serafinowicz playing Reginald Smith, a slightly bemused businessman visiting Mrs Tweedy’s giant nugget factory.”
Joing Richardson and Serafinowicz in the film are Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, David Bradley, Romesh Ranganathan, Daniel Mays and Nick Mohammed.
The original “Chicken Run” was conceived by “Wallace and Gromit” creator Nick Park and Aardman Animations co-founder Peter Lord. Aardman Animations’ first feature, “Chicken Run” grossed over $225 million at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time.
“Chicken Run 2,” which will premiere on Dec. 15, resumes the original story over 20 years later. It was written by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’Farrell and Rachel Tunnard. Steve Pegram and Leyla Hobart serve as producers alongside executive producers Lord, Park, Kirkpatrick and Carla Shelley.
Also coming from Aardman is the first “Wallace and Gromit” full-length feature, which is set to premiere on Netflix around Christmas 2024.
