Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern is becoming a staple of the new DC Universe.
Fillion is a busy actor, with the star currently leading the long-running The Rookie, as well as working on an animated revival of his cult classic space Western series Firefly alongside other original cast members of the sci-fi series. That said, amid Fillion’s long list of movies and TV shows, the actor keeps finding projects to return as Guy Gardner. The sarcastic Green Lantern was introduced in James Gunn’s Superman movie, being part of the superhero team known as the Justice Gang. Now, it seems like Fillion’s Green Lantern is becoming one of the most important players in the DCU Chapter One.
Set to return at some point on HBO’s Lanterns, which debuts this Sunday, Fillion will also come back as Guy Gardner in Mister Miracle, as showrunner Tom King has confirmed the update to Entertainment Weekly. King is one of the creators who developed DC’s new Green Lantern series, which stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, alongside Ozark‘s Chris Mundy and Watchmen‘s Damon Lindelof.
According to King, those who watch Guy in Lanterns, which is billed as a gritty detective series, will have no problem with the character in animated form, as he is “over the top.” Check out Tom King’s full quote about Fillion’s Guy Gardner joining Mister Miracle below:
“We brought Nathan into Mister Miracle’s show, and doing that, it’s just so wonderful. He brings that energy to every aspect of it. And you would think it would be different tonally from [Lanterns], but it blends because that’s who Guy is. He’s that guy who is over the top. We all know that guy who’s a little bit like that.”
Previously, Fillion made his first TV appearance in the DCU as Guy Gardner in Peacemaker season 2, preparing him for his upcoming live-action DC series, Lanterns. That said, he is heading into animation with Mister Miracle, which is a different medium altogether. However, as mentioned by King, Guy’s sarcasm and high energy make him the perfect Green Lantern, based on what Lanterns‘ trailers have shown so far from Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Pierre’s John Stewart, to make the jump to the animated medium. Besides, Fillion has plenty of experience, not only with animated projects, but as a Green Lantern for DC.
Before he was cast as Guy Gardner in the live-action DC Universe, Fillion voiced the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern in several animated DC movies, including Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, The Death of Superman, and many more. That, added to the fact that Guy Gardner and Mister Miracle were famously part of the Justice League International in the comics, might have been key factors in why the actor was brought in for the upcoming DCU animated series. Instead of leading to a traditional Justice League like many believe is the case, Superman‘s Justice Gang could evolve into the JLI.
That would make sense for a variety of reasons. Besides Guy’s confirmed role in Mister Miracle, the Justice League International’s founder in DC Comics was Maxwell Lord. In the DCU, Lord, played by Sean Gunn, was revealed as the man behind the Justice Gang. Batman, who will lead the announced The Brave and the Bold movie, Blue Beetle, of which a version is reportedly in Man of Tomorrow, and Booster Gold, whose live-action DCU series remains in development, were all in the JLI. As such, by putting Fillion’s Green Lantern in Mister Miracle, DC could be setting up the team.
