Morgan Freeman Says He Dislikes Black History Month and The Term African-American

Morgan Freeman has previously spoken out on his beliefs about Black History Month, and how he does not see it as a good thing in the grand scheme of things. In a new interview the legendary actor has doubled down on his thoughts on the concept as well as explaining why he doesn’t not stand with the term “African-American” either.

Freeman doesn’t do many interviews, but while speaking to The Times, he expressed his feelings about how he believes that the whole idea of singling out one month for Black history is counter-productive when it comes to dealing with race issues. He said:

“Two things I can say publicly that I do not like. Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month?”

In addition to this, Freeman also explained why he doesn’t like the term of African-American and finds it a little insulting.

“I don’t subscribe to that title… Black people have had different titles all the way back to the [n-word] and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American’. What does it really mean? Most black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”

Freeman has been previously outspoken on the subject of how Black History Month is something he believes only serves to encourage a division when, as he put it, there is no White History Month, and he feels that the best way to get rid of racism is to stop talking about and splitting people into race groups.

Morgan Freeman Is One Of America’s Greatest Actors

Columbia Pictures

Whether acting, directing or simply offering his iconic voice to a piece of narration, Morgan Freeman has earned himself a place among the greatest Hollywood stars of all time. From Oscar winning performances, to roles in superhero movies and even comedies, there is nothing that the actor has not done, and he is not finished yet.

Even at the age of 85, Freeman shows no signs of slowing down. Having appeared in several movies over the last few years including Ryan Reynolds’ action sequel Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America, Freeman has more movies coming soon. In March, he had a lead role in The Ritual Killer, an action-thriller directed by George Gallo and co-starring Cole Hauser, and that was followed by the Florence Pugh-starring A Good Person.

He is currently filming the sci-fi movie 57 Seconds, and Luke Hemsworth’s action movie Gunner, in which he takes on the role of the villain, all in addition to roles in TV series Lioness and the movies Sniff and Hate To See You Go. When all is said and done, Morgan Freeman has almost 150 acting credits to his name, and even when the movies he stars in have not received unanimous praise, his mere presence has been the highlight of it.
