Full disclosure: I generally find Godzilla and other monster-related stuff fun, but not engrossing. It’s mostly enjoyable for the big monster attacks, and the human story is what we all need to drudge through to get to the good stuff. Apple TV+’s canonical Monster-verse show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters flips the script, and is better for it. While there are wild, massive monster attacks every episode, the focus is on the human drama. Spanning two timelines and sneakily casting Wyatt Russell and Kurt Russell in the same role, the show paints a tapestry of family pain over multiple generations exacerbated by government intrigue and rampaging monsters called Titans. The even better news is that if you mostly tuned out of the “plot” during any previous Legendary Pictures monster movies, you can start watching Monarch with no prior knowledge. Come for the monster attacks, stay for some good acting and twisty drama.
