The subgenre of horror movies featuring different kinds of monsters is alive and well. Filmmakers have sought to make survival thrillers that highlight all sorts of unique animals, transforming unexpected creatures into intense threats. One of the more recent examples is Hungry, a 2026 horror movie centered around carnivorous hippopotamuses that wreaks havoc on a group of tourists as they fight to survive the unconventional threats. Now, one horror movie that has become a cult classic in recent years is finally getting a follow-up film, with a whole new cast.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Paramount is working on a follow-up to the horror movie Crawl, which was released in 2019. The first movie starred Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and her father who, after a Category 5 hurricane, find themselves trapped in a Florida home that has become infested by alligators. Horror movies have found success thanks to small production budgets, and this movie is no exception: Crawl earned $91.5 million at the box office on a budget of less than $15 million, helping it turn a profit while telling a self-contained story that was both entertaining and terrifying.
Crawl was also produced by horror icon Sam Raimi, best known for the original Evil Dead films as well as Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. Alexandra Aja, who directed the original Crawl film, will also return to direct the sequel. The director most recently made the 2024 horror film Never Let Go, starring Halle Berry and produced by Shawn Levy. Along with the news that a sequel is in the works, there is new casting information as well as details about the sequel’s story. Mason Gooding, who starred in Josh Ruben’s 2025 horror hit Heart Eyes, will star in the Crawl Sequel along with One Piece breakout star Emily Rudd.
The Hollywood Reporter states that the sequel to Crawl has been in the works since 2024, and that the new film will change the backdrop from Florida to New York. After a hurricane hits the city, alligators will apparently hit the streets, setting the stage for another intense surgical horror film. Jason Harry Pagan and Andrew Deustchman are credited as working on the script for the movie alongside the director and Gregory Levasseur. Sam Raimi also returns as a producer on the film alongside Craig Flores and Aja, with Levasseur and Azizi executive producing.
Rudd has had a hot career streak following her critically acclaimed performance as Nami in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece, which is set to release its third season next year. The actor is also starring opposite Austin Abrams in the 20th Century Studios film Whalefall, which is set to be released in October. It will be interesting to see if the movie has any narrative connection to the first Crawl film, or if the horror sequel takes an anthology approach. There is noc set release or production start date for the Crawl sequel, though with so much of the creative team already established, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the movie starts filming sooner rather than later.
