Mean Girls 2024 Movie: The Plastics Are Back!

Paramount has released the first look at the long awaited adaption of “Mean Girls.” Based on the 2004 comedy and adapted from the 2018 Tony-nominated musical of the same name. This will be a big screen remake of the “Mean Girls“ musical from Broadway (which closed in 2020).

In this new twist on the teenage cult classic, Tina Fey, who wrote both the 2004 movie and the stage musical, returns as screenwriter and producer with Lorne Michaels producing alongside her.

The brand new cast includes a group of talented young actors who will be bringing the same characters as the original film to life. Reneé Rapp (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”) will play the infamous Regina George, reprising her role on Broadway. Joining the cast are Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, (“Mare of Easttown”), Auli’i Cravalho (“Moana”) as Janis ‘Imi’ike, Christopher Briney (“The Summer I Turned Pretty”) and Aaron Samuels, Jaquel Spivey (“A Strange Loop”) as Damian Hubbard, Avantika as Karen Shetty and Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners.

Tina Fey who played Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadows who played Mr Duvall who starred in the first movie will return in their original roles as well. They will be joined by Jenna Fischer (“The Office”), Busy Philipps, Avantika, Mahi Alam, Bebe Wood, Ashley Park (“Emily in Paris), Connor Ratliff and Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”).

Since it is adapted from the musical, you can expect this version to include quite a bit of music. So dont be surprised if Regina George burst out into song. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Fey teased the songs in the movie will be a lot more “pop” than the original musical. “In Broadway, everything has to play to the back of the house, and in movies, everything can come back in and things can play really intimately,” she said. “We have a very cool directing team, a very cool choreographer. It’s going to be great.”

From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic. The key plot points of the story will remain similar to the original film, but this movie will be made for a whole new generation. Rice will portray Cady Heron, the new girl at school who is taken in by Janis and Damian, played by Cravalho and Spivey, respectively. Janis and Damian instruct Cady to infiltrate the by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics”. When Cady is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group, ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George played by Reneé Rapp and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika), Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.
