Look, it’ll all make sense once you’ve read this week’s MarvelBlog News.

Brand Newer Day?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day just did the impossible at the box office.

The latest Spidey film has now earned more than $950 million domestically.

Ordinarily, we focus on round numbers for box office feats, but this situation isn’t ordinary.

In fact, Brand New Day just became the FIRST film ever to do that.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens previously held the North American box office record with $936.7 million.

So, while another $25 million may not sound like much, it’s actually everything.

No other movie has reached this level of North American revenue.

How will Sony celebrate its staggering feat? It’s Sony, so you can probably guess.

Yes, they’re going to squeeze this cash cow for everything they can.

Sony has revealed that it will re-release the film even though it’s still in theaters.

With Brand New Day arriving on digital next Tuesday, Sony isn’t satisfied.

Sony has returned to the editing bay to restore some previously cut footage.

Specifically, I’m hearing that Rosario Dawson’s scenes as the Night Nurse will return.

Dawson, a known character from Netflix’s The Defenders era, isn’t in the film.

Well, she wasn’t before now, but she’s about to be. Got all that?

I’m not sure I do, either, but it’s what corporations do in the name of profit.

About the Re-Releases

Nobody was begging for these additional scenes, yet fans will go watch them anyway.

Ultimately, they’ll become an integral part of the home release…but not the first one.

Sony’s already setting the table to sell multiple versions of its digital release.

First, fans will buy Spider-Man: Brand New Day in its original form.

Then, in a few months, Sony will sell the new scenes as a special edition.

Most consumers won’t buy both, but some will. That’s the point here.

Sony will monetize Tom Holland within an inch of his life.

I’ll throw in that Sony is doing an Any% speedrun of Avengers: Endgame.

Disney has been doing the same thing with its 2019 release.

During that film’s initial theatrical run, it became the biggest global box office hit ever.

At the time, Endgame surpassed Avatar. Then, a funny thing happened.

Disney re-released Avatar, and it once again reclaimed its box office throne.

Now, history seems like it will repeat itself in reverse, as Endgame is back in theaters.

Disney added some new scenes that strengthen the connective tissue with Avengers: Endgame.

Fans have eaten up the new content, even as some complain about the new scenes.

I’m specifically not discussing them here to save the surprise for you.

However, the Russo Brothers, the directors of both films, are happily doing so.

You’ll notice that’s the official Disney site hyping the re-release in an odd way.

Disney doesn’t care about the modest amount of money Endgame’s earning right now.

That’s couch cushion change compared to what Avengers: Doomsday would be.

So, the company is working hard to associate Endgame, a beloved film, with Doomsday.

That’s a smart move in the wake of the public’s general disappointment with the MCU in the 2020s.

Making one seem like a direct sequel to the other sidesteps the issues from recent misfires.

Plus, Endgame will gain tons of positive publicity if/when it surpasses Avatar (again).

From Sony’s perspective, it has watched fans flock to watch Endgame again.

Their thinking is that these same fans will do the same thing for a better version of Brand New Day.

Since re-editing the film won’t cost much, it’s a worthwhile attempt, albeit a greedy one.

Marvel Miscellany

On the subject of upcoming Sony titles, we have a new Spider-Man entry.

You probably shouldn’t get your hopes up, especially after Spider-Man Noir.

Still, reports indicate that Amazon has settled on its next Spidey series.

This one will draw inspiration from the Clone Saga, a popular but divisive comic series.

There were multiple iterations of it, and you can read the details here.

Sony is leaning toward the second series, which would focus on Ben Reilly.

He’s the Scarlet Spider in the comics, which makes him an interesting choice for a series.

Neither Sony nor Amazon would speak on record about the project.

Still, someone leaked info that this series would veer from the comic’s storyline.

I take that to mean, “We know some of you hated the resolution. We’ll fix it.”

This project remains speculative until Amazon confirms its existence.

Even then, we all saw how poorly the streaming service treated Spider-Noir.

As such, I’m keeping my hopes modest for this project.
