MarvelBlog News for December 10th, 2023

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman

How many set leaks are too many? Ryan Reynolds and the readers of MarvelBlog don’t line up on the answer here.

We’ll talk about this story and plenty more in MarvelBlog News.

Stop Leaking!

Ryan Reynolds possesses a natural, easy-going confidence that makes him easy to like.

At times, the Deadpool star has leveraged his charisma to send not-so-subtle messages to his fans.

In the hands of lesser talents, such actions could prove divisive and counterproductive.

Reynolds always manages to get away with it because people are inclined to laugh at his jokes, though.

This behavior came up again during the past week after Reynolds tweeted this:

In case you’ve got Twitter blocked, here’s part of the quote:

“PLEASE don’t overuse the phrase, “Deadpool Leaks” because it might screw up search results if anyone is looking for Deadpool leaks or Deadpool spoiler…”

Reynolds is playing off the fact that so many Deadpool 3 spoilers have flooded the internet that he’s worried about a lack of mystery.

So, the actor rather cleverly just tried to mess up the SEO for Deadpool 3 spoiler searches by drowning the noise.

By the time you read this, his post could feasibly be the top search result for Deadpool 3 spoilers. If not, he’s at least used humor to de-escalate the problem.

Deadpool Vents about Leaking

Reynolds also posted this note on Instagram:

“Surprises are part of the magic of theatrical movies.

“It’s important for us to shoot the new Deadpool film in real, natural environments, using practical effects, as opposed to making the movie indoors and digitally.

“Telephoto lenses continue to spoil surprises and create a difficult situation for everyone.

“Here’s hoping some of the websites and social channels hold back showing images before they’re ready.

“The film is built for audience joy–and our highest hope is to preserve as much of that magic as possible for the finished film and the big screen.

“Part of the reason people post spoilers is because they’re excited.

“I realize these aren’t real world issues and it’s firmly in the ‘good problems’ bucket.

“I love making this movie.”

That’s a Canadian who demonstrates his upbringing by politely scolding would-be leakers in a charming, heartfelt way.

Posts like this are both reasonable and well-considered. They also exemplify why audiences are inclined to adore Ryan Reynolds.

Still, I’m not going out on a limb when I say that the leaks are likely to continue because that’s where the money is for scoopers.

But, on the bright side…

Echo Reviews Are…Good?

On many occasions, I’ve referenced the fact that I’m privy to information that I choose not to share with you.

The last thing I want to do is spoil the joys of the MCU for you.

Still, I warned you at the start of 2023 that you shouldn’t get your hopes up about The Marvels.

I’ve also said the same Echo, a television series whose production went so poorly that Marvel had to reduce six episodes into five.

In the history of television, that has literally never been a good sign.

So, when I heard that Marvel was hosting critics for reviews of the first three episodes, I braced for the worst.

To my shock, the reviews I’ve read are quite encouraging. Many of them refer to an action sequence that will remind fans of Daredevil on Netflix.

In other words, this fight will be intense…and brutal. Thus far, Disney+ titles haven’t included much graphic violence.

Well, the times are changing. In fact, when you load Disney+ today, you’ll find a Hulu tile.

Yes, you can watch Hulu programming on Disney+ now, and you probably know how adult some of that content is.

Disney and Marvel are changing with the times, and Echo is suddenly looking more like a case of solid timing.

Marvel comics have often differentiated the bigger stories from street-level superheroes.

Daredevil and his rogues gallery have always slotted into this category, and Echo will apparently introduce this style as part of Marvel’s new Spotlight brand.

I haven’t discussed Spotlight much yet, but it’s what Marvel will call its standalone shows that don’t connect directly to the wider MCU.

By introducing Spotlight, Marvel gives its storytellers a wider berth, which we’d all agree is necessary based on 2023 events.

Speaking of the unexpected, Mahershala Ali just provided an update about the Blade movie, and it’s…an optimistic statement? Huh.

Ali says that he’s “sincerely encouraged,” and since he has two more Academy Awards than me, I’m inclined to believe him.

In similarly unexpected news, Marvel just settled with the family of Steve Ditko.

For more than two years, the parties have been at an impasse over the financial compensation owed to Ditko.

As a reminder, the Ditko estate was attempting to terminate licensing rights for Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and Iron Man, among others.

Presumably, any agreement allows Disney/Marvel to keep those characters, but we must wait for the official announcement to know for sure. It should come in a few weeks.

In less comfortable news, the Jonathan Majors trial is underway, and it’s going about like this. Nothing about this story is good for anybody.

In happier news, the season (series?) finale of Loki finished first on Nielsen’s Originals charts last week.

Loki claimed 753 million viewer minutes, which is a ton these days.

Marvel also has a 15 percent chance at winning the Best Visual Effects category at the Academy Awards.

The voting committee just narrowed the list of potential nominees to 20.

Three Marvel films made the shortlist. They are Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Marvels.

Yes, after all the nonsense behind the scenes, Quantumania might earn an Oscar nod. I’m not holding my breath, though.

In Sony’s Spider-Man Universe news, Steve Lightfoot, who was formerly the showrunner on The Punisher, has joined Amazon’s Spider-Man Noir as co-showrunner.

Finally, Mark Ruffalo reportedly can’t talk about this film. Weird, huh?
