The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Monday that the upcoming third season of Marvel’s popular Daredevil: Born Again series will be its last.
The Disney+ relaunch of the beloved Netflix series has been generally well received by critics and audiences, but its sunsetting seems to coincide with what is a broader reorganization of priorities at Marvel Television.

The company was aggressive with its series production after the 2019 launch of Disney+, crafting shows like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki—the list goes on. This modus operandi ultimately yielded diminishing returns, with Marvel-branded television shows quickly taking on the feeling of homework.

Recent conventional wisdom has posited that Marvel plans to largely step back from television and reprioritize its features. The recent renewal and subsequent cancellation of Wonder Man, combined with Daredevil: Born Again‘s conclusion, seem to corroborate this idea.

Marvel is not abandoning the television arena entirely, however. In their article reporting Daredevil: Born Again‘s phase-out, writers Borys Kit and Rick Porter noted that the company is currently developing several new series.

Kit and Porter write that “the company continually has three to five live-action shows in development.” According to the duo, the company just “greenlit a spy thriller referred to as Zodiac.”
It’s unclear if this is just a working title or the series’s actual name. It’s also uncertain which characters the show will feature; several characters and groups have borne the name “Zodiac” throughout Marvel’s history, though none are particularly popular.

Holistically speaking, Marvel seems to be nearing the end of a broader reset period. The company seems to be getting its proverbial ducks in a row before entering its ambitious future.
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will give way to the Mutant Saga, which Marvel hopes will lead it into the next decade of storytelling.

The company’s live-action television slate is expectedly a bit bare as the MCU completes this phase of its existence. VisionQuest will debut on Disney+ on October 14 and Daredevil: Born Again will hit the streamer next spring, but after that, Marvel has no live-action series scheduled.
That’s what makes Zodiac so interesting despite information being nebulous. It’s the only (confirmed) iron Marvel has in the fire as it transitions into a new age, and there’s, thus, some inherent interest there.

Marvel also has a solid track record with espionage thrillers. Zodiac‘s development should prove interesting to track over the coming months.
