Margot Robbie’s Extreme Harley Quinn Comments Proved She Needs To Return In The DCU 7 Years Ago

Margot Robbie’s Extreme Harley Quinn Comments Proved She Needs To Return In The DCU 7 Years Ago

Summary

  • Margot Robbie has expressed her desire to continue playing Harley Quinn in the DCU, stating that she is “so not done” with the character.
  • Robbie is willing to play Harley Quinn for as long as she physically can, showing her dedication to the role.
  • While there are currently no announced plans for Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the new DC Universe, her character’s ties to Amanda Waller make her return likely.

Margot Robbie already proved why she needs to return as Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s DC Universe seven years ago. Robbie first played Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad before leading some of the best DCEU movies in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad. With the reveal that the DCEU will be replaced with the upcoming DCU, some actors have been announced to be surviving the universe change, including Robbie’s co-star Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and more. That leaves the door open for Robbie to return as Harley Quinn, and the actress herself has explained in the past why she needs to be brought back for the DCU.

Speaking with Fandango‘s Erik Davis to promote Suicide Squad, Robbie revealed how much she wanted to continue making Harley Quinn movies in the DCEU.

According to Robbie, she was nowhere near done playing Harley Quinn at the time of Suicide Squad‘s release, which was proven true by her later two DCEU movies. What speaks to Robbie’s possible comeback as Harley Quinn in the new DC Universe, however, is what the star said next. Robbie claimed that she would do whatever she could to continue as Harley, wanting to keep playing her “Until [her] body gives out, and [she] can’t do it anymore.” Check out the full quote below:

Yeah, I’m so not done playing her yet. I will do whatever I can to keep playing Harley for another couple of years. Until my body gives out, and I can’t do it anymore.

Margot Robbie’s DC Universe Future As Harley Quinn Is Currently In Doubt

There are currently no announced plans for Harley Quinn, either with Robbie or someone else in the role, for Gunn’s DC Universe. In fact, back in April, Gunn shot down a Robbie Harley Quinn return rumor. At the time, a rumor was going around about Robbie coming back as Harley Quinn in the new DC Universe for a prequel series titled “Harleen.” The show was said to focus on “how her need to save the Joker led to her mind being shattered” and feature Two-Face. Gunn denied there being any truth to the rumor.

While Robbie’s Harley Quinn currently has no set project to return in the new DC Universe, that could change at any moment. Davis’ Amanda Waller is deeply tied to Harley Quinn’s story in the DCEU, and the character will likely be looking for revenge against Harley and her team for disobeying her orders at the end of The Suicide Squad if the movie’s plot continues into the DCU. Failing that, Waller’s ties to the DC supervillain world make her a natural figure to re-introduce the character. As such, either of these roads could thus easily lead to Robbie making her first TV series appearance as Harley Quinn in the DCU’s upcoming Waller.

Why Margot Robbie Should Keep Playing Harley Quinn In The DCU

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was one of the few constantly good aspects of the controversial DCEU. She managed to shine bright in a rather dull Suicide Squad, then soaring in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which was directed by DCU creative chief Gunn, making Robbie’s return as Harley Quinn yet more likely. The actress brings an incredible energy to the role, with Harley’s popularity skyrocketing across all media thanks to her work, and based on Robbie’s past comments, she will be game to play Harley Quinn throughout Gunn’s 10-year DCU plan, making her return perfect.
