Margot Robbie is about to debut her portrayal as one of pop culture’s most iconic blondes. The Babylon star is playing everyone’s favorite doll Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s live-action, big-screen adaptation of the plastic princess. The film, which releases on July 21, 2023, follows Barbie and Ken, played by Ryan Gosling as they embark on a journey into the real world.
While portraying an iconic figure seems to be all fun and games, filming wasn’t without some interesting challenges. Read below for some insight into what it was like to film the scenes!
Margot Robbie revealed how she perfected Barbie’s heel arch
Robbie is accustomed to playing iconic characters such as her previous roles as DC’s femme villan Harley Quinn and the infamous ice skater Tonya Harding. As with any role, Robbie may be required to physically transform herself to get into character.
For Barbie, Robbie had to perfect the doll’s famous heel arch. In a trailer for the upcoming film, a closeup shows Robbie’s feet maintaining Barbie’s arch as she steps out of a pair of heels.
Filming the foot scene was no easy feat for not only the actress but the crew as well. In a recent interview with Fandango, Robbie revealed secrets from the scene, which took eight takes to film. Getting Barbie’s heel arch required some assistance, and the crew came up with creative ways to land the pose.
“I walked up, we had little sticky bits on the floor, for the double-sided tape for the shoes so they wouldn’t come off – so I could get my feet out of them. I was holding onto a bar, but that’s it. I wasn’t in a harness or anything like that. I just walked up, kind of held onto the bar above camera.”
While many actresses would opt for a stunt double, Robbie refused, insisting to do the scene herself.
“I always try and do my own inserts. I hate when I watch a movie and I know it’s not my hands. I hate that so much, I always say to the director, ‘Please, let me do all my own things.’ I don’t like it, knowing that I didn’t do it.”
Fans can see Robbie’s dedication to her craft when Barbie hits theaters next month on July 21.
