After donning pink for the last several premieres, two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie opted for not-so-basic black to dazzle the star-studded world premiere held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday.
The Australian 33-year-old worked with her stylist Andrew Mukamal to recreate the strapless trumpet gown, matching peep-toe kitten heels, opera gloves, and diamond choker on the original Barbie ‘Solo in the Spotlight’ doll from 1960.
There was even the same metallic shimmer, stiff tulle hemline, and red rose embellishment on the frilly frock.
Hairstylist Bryce Scarlett coiffed Margot’s voluminous faux-ny tail for the pink carpet ceremony.
Make-up artist Pati Dubroff ditched the blue eyeshadow on the doll and instead brought out Robbie’s brows, applied pink blush to her cheekbones, and a bright red pout.

Dua Lipa – who contributed the song Dance The Night to the soundtrack – flaunted her slim 5ft8in figure and flashed her white thong in a completely sheer mesh gown selected by stylist Lorenzo Posocco.

They love it! Following the film’s premiere, the first reactions began to trickle in from critics on social media, with many lauding the ‘bombastic’ film for its ‘very smart’ commentary
Hairstylist Camilla Soole gave Ryan a fresh cut and style for the premiere and groomer Shane Thomas made sure his complexion looked bronzed and flawless.
He also found a way to honor his partner Eva Mendes, by wearing a custom necklace with the letter ‘E’ in Barbie font to match his dusky pink suit.
The former Mouseketeer reportedly ‘steals’ the entire movie thanks, in part, to his character performing an original song called I’m Just Ken.
Ryan told British GQ on May 31 that he once saw a Ken doll his two daughters had been playing with ‘face down in the mud next to a squished lemon’ and thought to himself: ‘It was like, this guy’s story does need to be told, you know?’
Gosling took a moment in the chaos to catch up with director Greta Gerwig, who wore a Barbie-pink skirt suit over a pussy bow blouse.
Margot seemed especially pleased to see Emmy winner America Ferrera, who plays a Mattel employee called Gloria who visits Barbieland.

Following the film’s premiere, the first reactions began to trickle in from critics on social media, with many lauding the ‘bombastic’ film for its ‘very smart’ commentary.
It’s thought the full review embargo lifts on July 13, as fans get ready for the theatrical release on July 21, going up against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Katcy Stephan, Variety‘s social media editor, was among the first to post a reaction to the film on social media, stating it was nothing short of ‘perfection.
‘#Barbie is perfection. Greta Gerwig delivers a nuanced commentary on what it means to be a woman in a whimsical, wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny romp,’ Stephan begins.
‘The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in roles they were clearly born to play,’ she adds.
ScreenRant’s Joseph Deckelmeier tweeted, ‘#Barbie caught me off guard & I mean that in the best way possible.’
‘It’s funny, bombastic, & very smart. Greta Gerwig aims for the fences & hits a home-run. Margot Robbie’s performance is great & @RyanGosling & @SimuLiu are pure entertainment! The whole cast is brilliant!; he added.
Collider’s Perri Nemiroff did enjoy the film as well, though she thought it was lacking in some important areas.
‘I have seen #Barbie! The craftsmanship is incredible. In particular the costume & production design includes next-level work that heavily contributes to creating the feeling that these truly are Barbies, their dream houses, and their worlds come to life,’ she began.
‘As for the story, that’s where I’m a bit more mixed. I think the film serves Margot Robbie’s Barbie and her journey especially well, but there are other characters experiencing important arcs that needed more screen time to really dig into and explore to the fullest,’ she added.
Nemiroff continued in another tweet, ‘Overall, #Barbie isn’t the home run I was hoping for, or that I think it needs to be given the topics it’s tackling, but it’s still a well made, bold film with a VERY strong voice and vision, one that often made me think, HOW does this movie exist? And that right there is almost always a quality in a film that will win me over.’
ComicBook.com’s Jamie Jirak tweeted, ‘I can’t officially quit Twitter before telling you all that #Barbie is currently my favorite film of the year.’
She continued, ‘Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations. She tackles the positives and negatives of Barbie so beautifully. Give Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, I’m dead serious!’
Pay or Wait’s Sharonda Williams agreed with Nemiroff’s take on the story, though she also largely enjoyed it.
‘#BarbieTheMovie is witty, heartfelt, and downright fun at times. Ryan Gosling is a scene stealer delivering most of the laughs while Margot Robbie’s heartfelt performance will tug at your heartstrings. While I enjoyed most of the film the screenplay feels bloated at times,’ she tweeted.
Williams added in another tweet that the screenplay is, ‘teetering between the camp #Barbie movie we expected to a sometimes too on the nose social commentary of society that takes away from important subplots & character development. The production and costume design is stunning but overall I left wanting a bit more from the film.’
Carla Renata added, ‘I saw #BarbieTheMovie and Greta Gerwig left me all in my feelings as did the production design, costumes, Hair and makeup! I was living for the dance numbers led by Simu Liu ! It’s overblown fun with a feminist twist.’
Ty Cole tweeted, ‘#BarbieMovie/#BarbieTheMovie is everything you wouldn’t expect from the series. It peels the layers off the superficial doll we all grew up with while showing how Ken is more than an asset and is figuring his identity out.’
He added, ‘A lot of us strive to be “perfect” like Barbie, but the film will show you don’t always have to be so perfect, because even in a “perfect world,” we still have flaws and that’s okay. It’s for teens and an adult crowd who grew up with the franchise. #BarbieTheMovie/#BarbieMovie.’
The Barbie world premiere also served as date night for the Canadian 34-year-old and his girlfriend, Interscope Records director of digital marketing Allison Hsu.
