Mandisi Dyantyis brings his acclaimed Symphonic Celebration Tour to Joburg

Mandisi Dyantyis is inviting Johannesburg audiences to experience his music in a way they’ve never heard it before as his acclaimed Symphonic Celebration Tour heads to the city.

After captivating audiences in Durban and Cape Town, the award-winning musician is bringing his theatrical orchestral production to Joburg, where his soulful catalogue will be reimagined alongside a powerful 60-piece orchestra.

The tour opened in Durban at The Playhouse Opera House with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Johannesburg leg will take place at Montecasino Teatro with the Egoli Symphonic Orchestra on July 3, 4, and 5 and will conclude with a special Cape Town performance at the Artscape Opera House on August 22, alongside the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

For Dyantyis, this is far more than a concert; it’s a full theatrical experience.

“It’s a spectacle,” he explained. “People know these songs already, but when they’re arranged for a symphony orchestra, they hear them differently. It almost feels like they’re hearing the music for the first time.”

The elaborate arrangements see every section of the orchestra, from soaring violins and rich cellos to flutes, clarinets and trombones, working together to create an emotional journey that transforms familiar songs into something entirely new.

While many artists would opt for one major show, Dyantyis deliberately chose to take the production across multiple cities.

“We want to reach as many people as possible,” he said. “There are people in different provinces and towns who’ve been asking us to come perform, so it made sense to bring the music closer to them.”

Each stop on the tour also offers a unique experience thanks to collaborations with different orchestras. Although some musicians may have previously performed in large-scale orchestral productions, every ensemble brings its own personality to the stage.

“Every orchestra has its own temperament and programming style,” Dyantyis explained. “Even if some players have done similar productions before, this experience is still fresh for everyone.”

The production is also introducing new audiences to both worlds, with regular symphony-goers discovering Dyantyis’ music while his fans experience the magic of a live orchestra for perhaps the first time.

Behind the scenes, however, there are no elaborate pre-show rituals.

Instead, Dyantyis relies on intensive rehearsals and preparation, saying his greatest motivation comes from respecting the audience.

“People spend their time and money to come and see us,” he said. “We have to make sure what we present is worthy of that investment.”

Despite his growing success, the musician remains humble about what continues to draw audiences to his work.

Rather than crediting himself, he believes it’s the honesty of the music that resonates.

“I don’t think there’s anything special about me,” he said. “I simply try to listen carefully to the stories that come from my own life, my community and what’s happening in the country, and then tell those stories through music.”

With breathtaking orchestral arrangements, theatrical storytelling and an emotionally charged performance, Symphonic Celebration is shaping up to be one of Johannesburg’s standout live music events, offering fans a rare chance to experience Dyantyis’ music on a truly cinematic scale.
