Make a Film in Mexico With Apichatpong Weerasethakul–One Week Left to Apply

Missed last year’s filmmaking lab with acclaimed director Apichatpong Weerasethakul? Apply for this year’s lab by June 15th.

In August, fifty filmmakers will travel to Yucatan, Mexico to live and create films remotely for 10 days. With this lab, Weerasethakul (MemoriaTropical Malady) is revisiting a workshop methodology originally created by Abbas Kiarostami and later adapted by Werner Herzog. Not only is this an opportunity to develop new work, but a chance to connect with a group of filmmakers from around the globe. Don’t miss the chance to apply!

Apichatpong Weerasethakul is recognized as one of the most relevant figures of world cinema, and the 2010 winner of the covetous Palme d’Or at Cannes for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

This year’s workshop takes you to Yucatán, Mexico to embark on an intimate filmmaking journey. In 2018, I attended a workshop from some of these same organizers—it’s a great model for a lab and, most importantly, it’s run with integrity. With 14 selections from the lab going on to recently screen at Cannes 2023, this is an excellent opportunity to push yourself, travel, create, and potentially showcase new work. On top of that, PlayLab Films will select 2 feature film projects to help continue production.
