Major update in quest for Nazi gold as hidden railway in bunker could lead to Amber Room treasure stolen by Hitler

TREASURE hunters believe they may be one step closer to finding the Amber Room stolen by the Nazis in World War Two after they discovered a hidden railway in a bunker.

The incredible discovery was made by the Jaćwież Historical and Exploratory Association which stumbled upon the rail tracks and wagon wheels while digging at the Mamerki bunker in Poland.

The tracks were discovered five feet below the surface in the Warmia and Mazury province, which was the headquarters of Hitler’s German Army Supreme Command, just a few miles from Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair bunker complex.

Director of the Mamerki Museum Bartlomiej Plebańczyk made the announcement on social media, noting that while it is known there is a rail line from Mamerki to the Wolf’s Lair, there have been no accounts that a railway line existed inside the complex itself.

He said: “This is a huge surprise as we did not know that there was a railroad inside the complex.

“Could it be the Gold Train with the Amber Room? We’ll find out soon enough….”.

The room, built for Russian Tsar Peter the Great in the 1700s, was filled with precious jewels, gold and amber before it was looted by the Nazis during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

The Amber Room is considered the crown jewel of the missing Nazi treasure haul, dubbed the “Eight Wonder of the World” after it was stolen from Catherine Palace near St Petersburg.

The contents disappeared in January 1945 after air raids and an assault on the city.

Some claimed it was destroyed by the bombs and others suggested the Nazis moved it to safety.

Treasure hunters across the globe have searched throughout Europe over time without any luck.

Previously treasure hunters claimed they had uncovered a hidden entrance to a secret bunker that could lead them to the treasure near the north-eastern Polish town of Wegorzewo.

Searches in 2016 for the amber panel near the former German bunkers in Mamerki village, Mamerki Museum, Poland, also failed.

And in 2017, amateur treasure hunters believe they have discovered the fabled room in a cave used by the Nazis in the Hartenstein hills near Dresden, Germany, but nothing was found.
