Melissa Viviane or Lizzo as she is fondly known, is an American rapper, singer and songwriter and Founder of Yitty, a shapewear brand. She is also a Grammy and Emmy winner. One of the main things to know about Lizzo, is that she is someone who never fails and never apologizes in being herself. Throughout her career, Lizzo has been subject to body shaming, due to her plus size. She is considered a role model and advocate for body positivity and self-confidence Which is something that her fans love very much about her, as she continues to inspire millions with her songs and her attitude towards bullies and self love. Lizzo’s profile is locked and she only has a certain amount of followers due to this very reason, but that doesnt stop her from being a target online.
Recently on May 31st, after a particular performance of her “Special” Tour, Lizzo took to social media to reveal that she had been bombarded with body shaming posts from trolls on the internet, the kinds of posts that she has to see everyday.
This is definitely not the first time, that this has happened to Lizzo, and whenever something like this this does, she usually finds an inspiring way to shut down the haters, but from the tweets that came next, you could tell these particular posts seemed to particularly affect our beloved Lizzo.
In heartbreaking fashion, Lizzo’s followers started to see a string of tweets, one after the other that clearly meant these posts, these terrible people who were attacking such an incredible human being like Lizzo were getting to her, and there it is, HUMAN BEING, sure she may be a star, she may be “Special”, but never forget that this talented individual is human too. The people attacking her for her body image will never understand. All they see when they look at her is body, but to quote Lizzo “Being fat isn’t my brand, being fat is what my body looks like.” If you can’t see that and still want to call yourself a fan, there’s the door. Lizzo is a body positivity advocate, yes but being fat is not who she is. Her music speaks for itself. Her brand is feel good music, championing all people and black girl liberation. She inspires all of us to be the best versions of ourselves.
After that Lizzo went on to talk about how she has always led with her talent. However
she says that when she released her hit “Good As Hell”, feel good and self love music was considered corny. “When I dropped Juice disco pop wasn’t “for them””. She goes on to to talk about how despite how she has been an ambassador of body positivity, it hasn’t always been easy, “when I was body positive in 2016 being body positive was “pandering””. Now everybody claims to be body positive themselves, everybody claims to support self love and yet Lizzo is still bullied for being who she is everyday. Everybody loves Lizzo’s latest hit “Special”, she has become somewhat of an icon for the plus sized community in the best possible ways, people praise her outgoing attitude and open nature. Then 3 years ago Lizzo formed her inclusive shapewear brand Yitty. Of course with all the good she was going came the haters, well let em say what they’re gonna say, cause Lizzo just takes it like a champ.
As for what happened recently, she stood up to the haters and on Twitter spoke her truth. In another post Lizzo simply wiped the skin off her back and used this as an opportunity to promote her incredible new line of Yitty clothing, check out her response here
Apart from being being an inspiring example of true body body positivity, self love, body image and self acceptance. Lizzo is also a shining example of someone who never lets fame get to her by remaining humble as you can see both through the person she is and through her music. Which is why we never continuously see her argue with narrow minded trolls on the internet, she always remains above the drama. This was one time we saw it really get to her, and she handled it with grace and sass as she always does.
We’ve always got your back Lizzo. ❤️
