The third season of The CW’s adaptation of Kung Fu recently hit HBO Max, so it’s the perfect time to catch up or start watching it from the beginning. What began as a simple concept — Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), college dropout, leaves her life and family in San Francisco for an isolated Chinese monastery and returns three years later after her Shaolin mentor is assassinated — has turned into a sweet and spicy drama with a major emphasis on family. Three seasons in now, Nicky is still the protagonist, but the entire Shen family, boyfriends and husbands included, are given moments in the spotlight to do what they do best, whether it’s her brother Ryan flexing his medical knowledge or her sister Althea hacking into anything like it’s no big deal. While Kung Fu‘s fate still hangs in the balance (though I’m really hoping we get good news from The CW soon!), the three available seasons of the soapy, action-packed series are a wild and fun ride I’d happily take again.
